Ethelbert W. Bullinger

1837 - 1913 Person Name: E. W. Bullinger Hymnal Number: 83 Composer of "[Art thou weary, heavy-laden?]" in The Canadian Hymnal Ethelbert William Bullinger DD United Kingdom 1837-1913. Born in Canterbury, he was an Anglican clergyman, Biblical scholar, and ultradispensationalist theologian and writer. Educated at King's College, London, he became a good organist, singer, and composer. He married Emma Dobson, 13 years his senior, and they had two sons. In 1861 he began as Associate Curate to the parish of St. Mary Magdelene, Bermondsey, and was ordained as priest in the Church of England in 1862. He served as parish curate in Tittleshall until 1866, then Notting Hill until 1869, them Leytonstone to 1870, and finally Walthamstow, until becoming Vicar of the new parish of St. Stephen's in 1874. He resigned his vicarage in 1888. In 1867 he was clerical secretary of the Trinitarian Bible Society, which he held (except for illnesses) until his death. The Society completed and published a Hebrew version of the New Testament, the Tanakh (introduction to the Hebrew Bible), formation of the Brittany evangelical Mission Society under Pasteur LeCoat and translation of the Bible into Breton, also producing the first ever Protestant Portuguese reference Bible. It also distributed Spanish Bibles in Spain after the 1868 Spanish Revolution. Bullinger, a practiced musician, collected and harmonized untranscribed hymns on his visits to Tremel, Brittany. 1819 - 1890 Hymnal Number: 405 Arranger of "HOMEWARD BOUND" in The Canadian Hymnal Rv John William Dadmun USA 1819-1890. Born at Cambridge, MA, he completed his education at the Wesleyan Academy, Wilbraham, MA. At 22 he joined the New England Methodist Conference and pastored churches in the towns of Ludlow, Southhampton, South Hadley Falls, Enfield, Ware, Monson, Ipswich, and Lowell, the first Methodist Church and Grace Church, Boston and First Church, Boston Highlands. For a number of years he was also prison Chaplain and Superintendent of schools in the city institutions of Boston at Deer Island, off the coast of Maine. He married Lucy Ann Dutton, and they had seven children: Lucy, Wiletta, Francina, Charles,William and two others. He was initiated into Masonry at the Mt. Lebanon Lodge in Boston, MA, and served as Grand Chaplain and District Deputy Grand Master, which he immensely enjoyed. He rose in ranks within the organization and was instrumental in forming the Mt. Vernon Chapter in Roxbury, MA. He was elected Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of MA. He was Knighted into the De Molay Commandery in Boston, serving several years and rising to Grand Prelate of MA & RI, and attained to a number of other significant positions within the Masons. In later years, after Lucy died, he married Martha Jane Rogers. He collected songs and contributed lyrics to some, publishing a number of song books: “Army & Navy melodies” (1862), “The Melodian” (1862), “Revival melodies” , “The Eolian harp” (1860), “The sacred harmonium”, “new revival melodies”, “Musical string of pearls”, The Masonic choir” (1864), “The humming bird”, “Union league melodies”, “The new golden chain of Sabbath school melodies”, “The olive leaf”, “The timbrel” (1866), and others. Copies of these works have been sold around the world. He died at Boston, MA. John Perry

William Jones

Died: January 6, 1800, Hollingbourne, Kent, England. Pseudonym: Jones of Nayland. Jones was educated at Charterhouse and University College, Oxford. He became Vicar of Bethersden, Kent (1764); Pluckley, Kent; and Paston, Northamptonshire; perpetual Curate of Nayland, Suffolk (1777); and Rector of Hollingbourne, Kent (1798). He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1775. His works include: The Catholic Doctrine of the Trinity, 1756 Fairchild Discourses, 1775 Physiological Disquisitions, 1781 A Treatise on the Art of Music, 1784 Church Pieces for the Organ with Four Anthems in Score, 1789 Jones was a descendant of the Col. J. Jones, who was one of the signatories to the death warrant of King Charles I of England. He used to regularly observe January 30 as a day of fasting and humiliation for his ancestor’s sin. Théodore Monod

Monod, Pastor in the French Reformed Church, was born in Paris, Nov. 6, 1836, and educated for the ministry at Western Theological Seminary, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. James Oren Thompson

1834 - 1917 Person Name: J. O. Thompson Hymnal Number: 180 Author of "Lord of harvest, send forth reapers" in The Canadian Hymnal Born June 9, 1834 in Waldo, ME. He was a minister before joining the army and fighting in the Civil War. After the war he joined the Methodist Episcopal Maine Conference in 1866. He transferred to the Providence, RI conference and retired in 1886. He moved to Keyser, WV and edited The Mountain Echo. He then moved to Charleston, WV and served as secretary of the Agriculture.
