Emma Willard

1787 - 1870 Person Name: Emma C. Willard Hymnal Number: d85 Author of "Rocked in the cradle of the deep" in School Recreations Willard, Emma C. [née Hart]. A teacher and educational writer, born at Berlin, Connecticut, 1787; resided in 1838 and sometime after at Hartford, and for many years conducted a well-known school at Troy, New York. She died at Troy, 1870. Her hymn Rocked in the cradle of the deep (Sailor's Hymn), is sometimes said to have been published in 1830. It is found in Beecher's Plymouth Collection, 1855, No. 1285. Its earlier appearance has not been verified. It is a successful sailor's hymn. It is included in several modern collections. [Rev. F. M. Bird, M.A.] -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)
