James Oren Thompson

1834 - 1917 Person Name: J. O. Thompson Hymnal Number: 232 Author of "The Call for Reapers" in Songs of His Coming Born June 9, 1834 in Waldo, ME. He was a minister before joining the army and fighting in the Civil War. After the war he joined the Methodist Episcopal Maine Conference in 1866. He transferred to the Providence, RI conference and retired in 1886. He moved to Keyser, WV and edited The Mountain Echo. He then moved to Charleston, WV and served as secretary of the Agriculture. F. L. Eiland

1860 - 1909 Person Name: F. L. E. Hymnal Number: 211 Author of "Coming Again" in Songs of His Coming Franklin L. Eiland was born in Noxubee county, Miss., March 25, 1860. He was reared on the farm and attended the old field school. The school house on the hill and the old Oaken Bucket, etc., etc., were objects of interest in his curriculum. He had traveled some before finally leaving home including a trip to Tx, but in 1882 he came to Tx to remain. November 13, 1884 he married Miss Mary E. Nisbett of Robertson county. She lived nine years. In 1894 he married Miss Ella May Kennedy of Van Zandt county. She lived only 10 days. October 21, 1896 he married Miss Minnie Jarushia Valentine of McLennan county. She still survives. They have one sweet little daughter, Mary Ella Oree. She is quite bright and is already starting music at the age of three. Little Elva Lynn came Sept. 16, 1901 and God took her Aug. 9, 1902. The Eilands have been farmers and professional men along many lines, but Prof. Eiland was the only one that ever embarked in the music business. He was inclined to music from a child and appropriated all the advantages in this line that came his way. Many things of minor importance happened along his life but in 1884 he fell into a meeting conducted by Maj. W. E. Penn, and the superior music rendered there awaked all his latent talent and set him on fire with a desire to make a musician. He at once began a musical career that has attained an abundant success. He soon began teaching and continuing to study to became a composer. He sought the association of those who could teach him and in this and other ways has enjoyed advantages of the best talent to be found. In 1893 he began publishing. From this, came in due time The Trio Music Co. now operated in Waco. Prof. E. is president of the company and editor in chief of the journal. He moved later to Myrtle Springs to secure the benefit of the wonderful waters of those springs. He is given great credit for good influence wielded for his church and community. Spencer Lane

1843 - 1903 Hymnal Number: 199 Composer of "PENITENCE" in Songs of His Coming Spencer Lane USA 1843-1903. Born at Tilton, NH, he served in the 8th NH Infantry during the American Civil War. After the war, he studied at the New England Conservatory and taught vocal and instrumental music at Oneida and Utica, NY. He married Isabel F. (no information on children was found). He later moved to Woonsocket, RI, where he ran a music store and served as organist and directed the choir for the St. James Episcopal Church for 13 years. He moved to Monson, MA, then to Richmond, VA, and in 1896 to Baltimore, MD. In Baltimore he worked for the music firm of Sanders & Stayman and was music director at the All Saints Protestant Episcopal Church. While at Woonsocket, his pastor gave him the hymns for an evening service, one of whose tune he didn’t care for, so he composed another tune for it, ‘Penitence’. That is his only hymn contribution. He was an author and music composer: “My beloved, I’ll think of thee”, “A dream – grand march”, others. He died at Reedville, VA. John Perry

1862 - 1957 Hymnal Number: 231 Arranger of "[My sheep know my voice]" in Songs of His Coming Martin, Isaiah Guyman. (Gentry County, Missouri, April 18, 1862--August 23, 1957, Pasadena, California). Richmond School of Music; Missouri (now Kansas) Wesleyan; Iliff School of Theology. Married in 1905, two sons, one daughter. Converted at age 12, joined the Baptist Church; 1893 joined the Methodist Church and began his ministry. 1903 joined the Church of the Nazarene and in 1905 was appointed District Superintendent of "all the territory east of the Rocky Mountains." Pastored First Church of the Nazarene, Chicago; evangelist. Tenor soloist; composed songs as a hobby (around 200), frequently while playing the reed organ. "Eastern Gate" is probably his most familiar hymn. It was written as a tribute to Dr. P.F. Bresee's traditional farewell at gatherings of the Church of the Nazarene, "We will meet at the Eastern Gate." According to Martin, "One of the old-timers was trying to get a tune for some words he had written, but couldn't put it over, so I got to humming a tune, which turned out to be 'Eastern Gate.'" --E. William Ellsworth Witter

1854 - 1954 Person Name: W. E. Witter Hymnal Number: 197 Author of "While Jesus Whispers" in Songs of His Coming Witter, Will Ellsworth, was born Dec. 9, 1854, near La Grange, New York, and educated at the Genessee State Normal School, New York, and the University of Rochester. From the latter he passed in 1880 to the Rochester Baptist Theological Seminary, and in 1884 he entered the Baptist Ministry. He has written several songs and poems, one of which:— While Jesus whispers to you (The Divine Call) has come into somewhat prominent use. It was written in July 1878, and originated mainly in the great anxiety of the author respecting two of his pupils. In 1878 it was set to music by H. R. Palmer, and included in his Book of Anthems, 1878: from whence it passed into Good as Gold, and I. D. Sankey's Sacred Songs and Solos, London 1881. -- John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology (1907)
