Margaret S. Haycraft

1855 - 1936 Person Name: Margaret Haycraft Hymnal Number: 32 Author of "Come With Tuneful Voices" in Deseret Sunday School Songs Haycraft, Margaret Scott, née MacRitchie, born at Newport Pagnell, Bucks, now (1906) resides at Bournemouth. She contributes to various periodicals, has written many services of song, and several vols. of prose and verse. At the request of the Rev. C. Bonner she contributed the following (with a few shorter pieces) to the Christian Endeavour Hymnal, 1896, the Sumday School Hymnary, 1905, and the Junior Hymnal, 1906. 1. Bless the Lord for ever, Still his praise prolong. Praise to God. 1896, No. 16. 2. Green the hills and lovely. Boyhood of Jesus. Written 1904; 1905, No. 201. 3. In golden light of early days. Children's Praises. 1906, No. 58. 4. Let there be light at eventide. Parting Hymn. 1896, No. 165. 5. Thou art my Shepherd, Caring for all my need. Ps. xxiii. This is in W. B. Bradbury's New Golden Shower, 1866, p. 107, and Clarion, 1867, p. 219, marked as by Miss Thalheimer (in Hymns and Choral Songs, Manchester, 1904, No. 207, as "O God, my Shepherd"). 1826 - 1882 Person Name: Mrs. B. C. Slade Hymnal Number: 44 Author of "One More year Has Gone" in Deseret Sunday School Songs Mary Bridges Canady Slade USA 1826-1882. Born in Fall River, MA, she was well-educated and became a minister's wife, teacher, and poet. She was assistant editor of The New England Journal of Education. She also authored hymns, Sunday school materials and books on education, primarily used for training teachers. She authored a children's magazine, “Wide-awake”. She and her husband were active in the underground railroad (helping slaves achieve their freedom). She spent her whole life living in the same town. John Perry

John E. Gould

1821 - 1875 Person Name: J. E. Gould Hymnal Number: 141 Composer of "[Jesus, Savior, pilot me]" in Deseret Sunday School Songs John Edgar Gould USA 1821-1875. Born in Bangor, ME, he became a musician. He managed music stores in New York City and Philadelphia, PA., the latter with composer partner, William Fischer. He married Josephine Louisa Barrows, and they had seven children: Blanche, Marie, Ida, John, Josephine, Josephine, and Augusta. He compiled eight religious songbooks from 1846 thru 1869. He died while traveling in Algiers, Africa, and was buried in Philadelphia, PA. John Perry

Anna Letitia Waring

1823 - 1910 Person Name: Anna L. Waring Hymnal Number: 251 Author of "In Heavenly Love Abiding" in Deseret Sunday School Songs See also in: Hymn Writers of the Church ================ Waring, Anna Laetitia, daughter of Elijah Waring, and niece of Samuel Miller Waring, was born at Neath, Glamorganshire, in 1820. In 1850 she published her Hymns and Meditations, by A. L. W., a small book of 19 hymns. The 4th edition was published in 1854. The 10th edition, 1863, is enlarged to 38 hymns. She also published Additional Hymns, 1858, and contributed some pieces to the Sunday Magazine, 1871. Her most widely known hymns are: "Father, I know that all my life," "Go not far from me, O my Strength," and "My heart is resting, O my God." The rest in common use include:— 1. Dear Saviour of a dying world. Resurrection. (1854.) 2. In heavenly love abiding. Safety in God. (1850.) 3. Jesus, Lord of heaven above. Love to Jesus desired. (1854.) 4. Lord, a happy child of Thine. Evening. (1850.) 5. My Saviour, on the [Thy] words of truth. Hope in the Word of God. (1850.) Sometimes stanza iv., "It is not as Thou wilt with me," is given separately. 6. O this is blessing, this is rest. Rest in the Love of Jesus. (1854.) 7. O Thou Lord of heaven above. Love of God in Christ, (1860.) These hymns are marked by great simplicity, concentration of thought, and elegance of diction. They are popular, and deserve to be so. Telford's The Methodist Hymn Book Illustrated, 1906, p. 271, that Miss Waring contributed to her uncle's (S. M. Waring's) Sacred Melodies, 182G, cannot be correct, as she was then only six years old. William Hammond

1719 - 1783 Person Name: Hammond Hymnal Number: 155 Author of "Lord, We Come Before Thee Now" in Deseret Sunday School Songs Hammond, William, B.A, born at Battle, Sussex, Jan. 6, 1719, and educated at St. John's College, Cambridge. In 1743 he joined the Calvinistic Methodists; and in 1745, the Moravian Brethren. He died in London, Aug. 19, 1783, and was buried in the Moravian burial-ground, Sloane Street, Chelsea. He left an Autobiography in Greek, which remains unpublished. His original hymns, together with his translations from the Latin, were published in his:— Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs. To which is prefix'd A Preface, giving some Account of a Weak Faith, and a Full Assurance of Faith; and briefly stating the Doctrine of Sanctification; and shewing a Christian's Completeness, Perfection, and Happiness in Christ. By William Hammond, A.B., late of St. John's College, Cambridge. London: Printed by W. Strahan; and sold by J. Oswald, at the Rose and Crown in the Poultry, mdccxlv. A few of his original hymns from scriptural fidelity and earnestness have attained to a foremost position amongst English hymns. These include, "Awake, and sing the song," and "Lord, we come before Thee now." His translations of Latin hymns were amongst the earliest published after those contained in the Primers and other devotional works of 16th and 17th centuries. They are of merit, and worthy of attention. Greater use might also be made of his original compositions. In addition to those named above, the following are also in common use:— 1. Brightness of the Father's Face. God the Son. 2. How great the Christian's portion is. Possession of All in Christ. 3. If Jesus is yours. God's unchangeable Love. 4. In Thine own appointed way.
