Henry’s parents were Henry Davan & Sarah Wetton of Hayward’s Heath, Sussex. He was a chorister at St. Mary’s Church, Stoke Newington, and served as organist at All Saints’ Church, Stoke Newington (1877-84); Christ Church, Woburn Square (1884-86); St. Gabriel’s Church, Pimlico (1886-89 and 1890-93); sub-organist at Wells Cathedral (1890); assistant organist to Frederick Bridge at Westminster Abbey (1881-96); organist and choirmaster, Finchley Parish Church (1892-93); organist and chorus-master, Queen’s Hall Choral Society (1893-94 season); organist and choirmaster, St. Paul’s, Finchley (1895-96); and organist at Alexandra Palace (1901). He also conducted the choir of the People’s Palace (1902-03); played the organ and directed the choir at the Foundling Hospital, London; and headed the Music Department at Northampton Institute, Clerkenwell.
