Rv Samuel Gilman DD, 1791-1858. Born at Gloucester, MA, he graduated from Harvard and became a tutor there from 1817 to 1819. In 1819 he married Caroline Howard, who was herself an author, writing poems, novels, and essays over a 70 year period (she outlived him by 30 years). They had two daughters. He pastored a Unitarian congregaton at Charlestown, SC, and retained that pastorate until his death. He was an author and translator, and was active in the temperance cause. He wrote the institution alma mater “Fair Harvard”. He died at Kingston, MA.
