Cox, Luther J. (December 27, 1791--July 26, 1870). He was born on a farm in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, and died in Hampden, Maryland, his home for the last twelve years of his life. The "Bard of the American Methodist Reformation," a layman and local preacher, one of the founders of the Methodist Protestant Church, he engaged in mercantile pursuits throughout all of his active life. He was the author of several hymns which were popular with the early-day Methodist Protestants.
