, born at Töttelstädt, Gotha, Jan. 8, 1787. Died at Gotha, March 28, 1860. Pianist and oragnist, pupil at Erfurt of G. H. Kluge on the organ, and Michael Gotthardt Fischer in composition, the of Spohr at Gotha, whence in 1808 he went to Jena. In 1810 he set out on a concert tour through North Germany to Sweden, then to Switzerland, winning applause everywher, and living for five years at Nuremberg, where his best compositions originated. In 1820 he returned to his native town and afterwards led an unsteady life, becoming a confirmed drunkard, and finally plaing in taverns for a supper.
