How would I go about searching for certain hymns using keywords such as “wedding," and then having only the the songs/music sheets show up with shaped notes?
What you are looking for is an instance with a page image from a hymnal with shaped notes. A few things need to come together for this search to yield results. Typically, we tag hymnals with shaped notes with the tag “Shape Note.” So, we need to have edited the hymnal and remembered to add the tag. We also typically indicate that a hymnal has page scans with music, but we also need to have edited the hymnal and remembered to add this indicator. Also, we will have needed to add the full text of the hymn; otherwise a keyword search will only search the first line, refrain first line, and title. Adding the full text takes quite a bit of time, so most hymnal editors skip this part. Finally, the image will need display public domain content in order to be viewed.
You can simply do a search of your keyword with “shape note" between quotation marks, and then look at the instances with images - they have icons that look like a camera. Or, using the Advanced search, put “Shape Note” in the Tag field under Hymnals, select “Image” under Media, and “Instances” under Result Type, then add your keyword in the top All Fields bar.
Or, if you are looking for hymns about weddings or marriage, or want to expand your search to any hymn that has the text typed in and might appear in a hymnal with shaped notes where the texts are not typed in, you can do an Advanced Search adding “Shape Note” to the Tag field under Hymnals and check the Images box under Media to find all of the shaped note hymnals in our collection. Then, add these hymnals to a smaller collection of “My Hymnals” (there is a link under the Indexes box on the hymnal page). Then do a keyword search or a topic search. This will search our entire collection of hymns, but will also add an icon to hymns that appear in your “My Hymnals” collection.
