Roberta Martin's Doxology

You are here

African American hymnals often include a tune for "Praise God from whom all blessings flow" as adapted and arranged by Roberta Martin in 1967 from DUKE STREET. Here on Hymnary, it looks like all of these instances have been merged into the authority for DUKE STREET, but these two tunes are not identical and should not be merged thusly. Can someone please untangle these?

Also, for what it's worth, the attributions in these hymnals are almost always wrong. DUKE STREET is of course by John Hatton, and this was adapted and arranged by Roberta Martin, copyrighted 15 November 1967, published as sheet music in 1967, and recorded on her album Praise God in 1968. The common attribution to George Coles is completely erroneous—he is the composer of the tune DUANE STREET, to which Thomas Ken's doxology has sometimes been set.

There is now an article about this on Hymnology Archive: https://www.hymnologyarchive.com/martin-doxology

I have separated out Roberta Martin's adaptation from DUKE STREET. However, we do not have control over what is printed in hymnals.
