It should have been Abashed be all the boast of age and Ashamed be all the boast of age. So I'm guessing the error message was because the versions with "every" instead of "all the" didn't exist, hence couldn't be merged. Wish I had a computer; I make far more of these idiot errors per hour on my phone than I do on a laptop or desktop.
It looks like merging texts is working again. However the link to the "Ashamed" text is an instance (not an authoritty) which is already located under the "Abashed" authority.

Merging texts is not working as it should right now. We are aware of the problem and are working to fix it.
Abashed and Ashamed

Now, yes
They were separate authorities, and I finally succeeded in merging them.
