Hinário para o Culto Cristão [Hymnal for Christian Worship] was published in 1991 by JUERP (Junta de Educação Religiosa e Publicações – Board of Religious Education and Publications, Rio de Janeiro) of the Brazilian Baptist Convention. The hymnal (known as HCC) was just the second in that convention’s 100+ years of existence and stands alongside the Cantor Cristão (Christian Singer) as Brazilian Baptists’ primary source for traditional congregational singing. The committee which selected and organized the hymnal contents was composed of leading Brazilian Baptist musicians, several Baptist pastors and theologians, and selected North American church musicians who were missionaries during the period of 1987-1990. Chairing the committee was Joan Larie Sutton, a second-generation missionary and prolific translator of church music texts (English to Portuguese). The HCC was the first complete hymnal in Brazil in which the music notation was produced with early generation music software. It contains 613 consecutively numbered titles, (441 hymns and 172 Bible readings), divided into ten major categories. The hymnal also includes a full array of indexes, nine in all. -David Hodges
