Text: | Nearing the Golden Gate |
Author: | John R. Clements |
Tune: | [Nearing the Gate, with the sun in the west] |
Composer: | H. P. Danks |
1 Nearing the Gate, with the sun in the west,
As slowly the day is declining;
The rays meet the waves with their bright foaming crest,
The clouds putting on a bright lining.
Refrain:
Nearing the Gate, the fair Golden Gate,
Beyond it the evergreen shore;
Where beauty and sunshine the valleys adorn,
And sorrow shall come nevermore.
2 Nearing the Gate, with the sea tossing high,
‘Mid hardships the journey we’re making.
In port, soon we’ll anchor where perils are o’er,
And billows no longer are breaking. [Refrain]
3 Nearing the Gate, it is life’s closing day,
The “Harbor of Peace” we have sighted;
And O what a rapture will shortly be ours,
At home with our loved ones united. [Refrain]
