Text: | How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds |
Author: | John Newton, 1725-1807 |
Tune: | ST. PETER |
Composer: | Alexander R. Reinagle, 1799-1877 |
1 How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
To all believing ears!
It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds,
And drives away our fears.
2 It makes the wounded spirit whole
And calms the heart distressed:
'Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary, rest.
3 Blest Name! The rock on which we build,
Our shield and resting place,
Our never-failing storehouse, filled
With countless gifts of grace!
4 O Jesus, shepherd, guardian, friend,
Our prophet, priest, and king,
Our Lord, our life, our way, our end,
Accept the praise we bring.
