12. Sunshine or shadow

1 When I walked with my Lord in the sunshine,
His companionship was sweet;
Then I wandered with him in the shadow,
And my joy was made complete.

Refrain:
Ev’rywhere, dark or fair,
Where my Savior leads me, will I gladly go;
Up on the mountain, down in the valley,
Ev’ry step he leads me, richer grace doth show.

2 When I stood on the mount in the sunshine,
Felt I strong to walk alone,
Then I groped in the gloom of the valley,
And my helplessness was shown. [Refrain]

3 When I walked with my Lord in the sunshine,
With my love was mingled pride;
When the dark shadows fell, I was humbled,
And my love was purified. [Refrain]

4 Oh, how precious the walk in the darkness!
Oh, how dear the hours of pain!
When the Savior is walking beside me,
Making loss supremest gain. [Refrain]
