Veni Emmanuel is based on the "`O´ Antiphons", a set of seven short prayers created in early Mediaeval Roman Catholicism as antiphons for the Song of Mary (Magnificat) during vespers seervices from December 17th to 23rd inclusive. Each antiphon after an initial "O" ("Ho" in Esperanto) names Christ with some title from the Hebrew Bible, and prays that He come to His Israel. The last antiphon, on the 23rd, corresponds to the first stanza of the hymn. Beveridge's Esperanto translation has only five stanzas. The original "O Wisdom" and "O King of the Nations" are missing. The stanzas lacking are supplied in this seven-stanza version, and its order of stanzas reflects the lost Latin acrostic — in the original, the initial letters of the Titles of Christ, read in reverse order, spell the Latin phrase "ERO CRAS", i.e., "I'll be [there] tomorrow" — which neither Beveridge nor Neale even attempted to preserve. However, it has not been possible to keep the sense of the Latin acrostic in an Esperanto acrostic. The "`O´ Antiphons" were created sometime in the 7th to 9th centuries. The hymn is probably not that ancient, thought it's not impossible, and some Catholics assert that the hymn is almost contemporary with the antiphons.

* Oddly, Adoru Kantante (and Adoru) here spell Emmanuel "Imanuel", and give the English title "O come, O come Immanuel", as if singing to Kant rather than Christ! I have followed Himnaro Esperanta with regard to spellings and capitalization, and AK in the matter of apostrophes.
