135. The Vision of Jesus

1 “We would see Jesus,” in Bethlehem’s glade,
Born in a manger, in poverty’s shade;
Sought for by wise men from country afar,
Wise in their seeking, and led by a star.

Refrain:
“We would see Jesus,” in all that we say;
“We would see Jesus,” day after day;
“We would see Jesus,” whene’er we pray;
O for a vision of Jesus.

2 “We would see Jesus,” neath olive-tree shade,
Falling in anguish, and bloody sweat prayed;
Thrice asking favor from heaven above,
Yielding his will, to the Father in love. [Refrain]

3 “We would see Jesus,” on dark Calvary,
Dying in anguish, for you and for me,
Breathing his life out that sinners might live
Love’s benediction, O Father forgive. [Refrain]

4 “We would see Jesus,” in high-priestly pray’r,
For his disciples who bowed with him there;
And for believers that they be hence-forth,
Sanctified wholly through Jesus the truth. [Refrain]

5 “We would see Jesus,” in Joseph’s new tomb
By loving hands spiced for the grave, and its gloom;
Waiting the vict’ry, by earth-quake made known
When angel messengers roll’d back the stone. [Refrain]
