1 Alas and did my Saviour bleed?
And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred Head
For such a worm as I?
2 Was it for crimes that I had done,
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing wonder, God's own Son
Is suffering there for me!
3 Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut his glories in,
When Christ the mighty Maker died
For mankind's every sin.
4 Thus might I hide my blushing face,
While His dear cross appears;
It brings to all a boundless grace,
Robs death of all its fears.
5 Help me, O Lord, that I may see
The debt of love I owe;
Help me to keep myself to Thee,
'Tis all that I can do.
