Text: | Hope of our hearts, O Lord, appear |
Author: | Edward Denny |
Tune: | CANAAN |
Composer: | Theodore E. Perkins |
1 Hope of our hearts, O Lord, appear,
Thou glorious Star of day!
Shine forth, and chase the dreary night,
With all our tears, away.
No resting-place we seek on earth,
No loveliness we see;
Our eye is on the royal crown,
Prepared for us and thee.
2 Light of the lonely pilgrim's heart!
Star of the coming day!
Arise, and with thy morning beams
Chase all our griefs away.
Come, blessed Lord! let every shore
And answering island sing
The praises of thy royal name,
And own thee as their King.
3 Jesus, thy fair creation groans
The air, the earth, the sea
In unison with all our hearts,
And calls aloud for thee.
Thine was the cross, with all its fruits
Of grace and peace divine;
Be thine the crown of glory now,
The palm of victory thine.
4 But, dearest Lord, however bright
That crown of joy above,
What is it to the brighter hope
Of dwelling in thy love?
What to the joy, the deeper joy,
Unmingled, pure, and free,
Of union with our living Head,
Of fellowship with thee?
