Clarence P. Walhout (PHH 6) was a member of the Poets' Workshop that prepared many of the versifications for the Psalter Hymnal. His setting of this royal psalm was written to be sung to the tune GENEVAN 93, chosen because it had long been a favorite in the Dutch psalm-singing tradition. Earlier editions of the Psalter Hymnal had not included this tune. For commentary on this royal psalm see PHH 93.
Liturgical Use:
See PHH 93.
--Psalter Hymnal Handbook
First published in the 1562 edition of the Genevan Psalter, GENEVAN 93 is in Hypo-Mixolydian mode and consists of four lines, each of which has a unique rhythmic pattern. This joyful music is well suited to part singing and festive occasions with brass accompaniment. The 1564 harmonization (altered) is by Claude Goudimel (PHH 6), who originally placed the melody in the tenor.
