Notes: The refrain, commonly referred to as Kyrie Guarany, comes from an indigenous people on the east coast of South America. The plaintive song arises from their particular experience of oppression and suffering. It reflects both the frustration and hope of the psalmist. A second stanza may be added that would allow the song to be used as a traditional Kyrie: “On the poor, on the poor, show your mercy, O Christ”/”Oré mboriajú verekó Jesucristo.” The chanting tone is very simple. An ensemble or congregation can easily sing the psalm in improvised harmony.
