Notes: |
Although it begins as a hymn of confident praise, this psalm deteriorates into despair before ending
with a doxological declaration of trust and praise. (The doxology also signals the conclusion of Book 3 of
the Psalter as a whole.) The down side of the psalm is acknowledged in st. 3. It would be good to set off this
stanza by having it sung by a solo voice or choir, with all rejoining on the final stanza. Note the melodic
“swing” at the end of the melody. This syncopation gives the final phrase a playful lift, but it can come as a
surprise to the uninitiated. This setting can be used in conjunction with the litany at 89C. |
