362. Alexander

1 Night is at hand, the day draws to its close,
O’er sea and land the song of evening flows;
Dear Lord, we pray each night with us abide,
And day by day we ask that Thou wilt be our Guide.

2 Lord, be Thou near, no darkness is in Thee,
Thy voice can cheer, bid every terror flee;
Thine eye beneath, we lay us down to sleep,
In life or death Thy love our souls will safely keep.

3 We close our eyes, and Lord, we do not know
If we shall rise again on earth below;
Yet we’re secure, no fears our souls affright,
Waking is sure, on earth or in the realms of light.
