322. From Greenland's Icy Mountains

1 From Greenland's icy mountains
To India's coral strand,
From Africa's bright fountains
To Asia's golden sand,
From many an upland river
To many a coastal plain,
God would the lost deliver
From error's evil chain.

2 Our own land's fairest breezes
Bear sounds of steeple bells,
All nature's beauty pleases,
Yet man builds countless hells.
In vain with lavish kindness
The gifts of God are strown;
Throngs turn from him in blindness
To false gods of their own.

3 Can we whose souls are lighted
With wisdom from on high,
Can we to those benighted
The lamp of life deny?
Salvation! Oh, salvation!
The joyful sound proclaim
Till those of every nation
Have learned Messiah's name.
