Dona Nobis Pacem

Call to Worship

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
As we enter this season of Advent,
may the love of God the Father, and the grace of Jesus the Son,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be and abide with us all.
Amen!

Assurance

As we hear the ancient prophecies of the coming of the Messiah,
we long for the day when death will be swallowed up
and every tear will be wiped away.
As we wait expectantly
for Christ’s promised return,
we live in the assurance of God’s gracious forgiveness.

Blessing/Benediction

In accordance with his promise,
we wait for new heavens and a new earth,
where righteousness is at home.
Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things,
strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish;
and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation.

Hymn Story/Background

The Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) of the Latin Mass includes three sections, translated into English as

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

The final phrase, “Grant us peace” (“Dona nobis pacem” in Latin), have been included in countless musical settings of the Agnus Dei throughout history, from composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach in his great Mass in B Minor to simple settings for congregational use. The origin of this particular setting in canon (like a round) is unknown, though many times it has been attributed to Mozart.
