The Catechism says that those who know Christ’s forgiveness are “to thank God for such deliverance” (Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 1, Question and Answer 2). As a result, “With our whole lives we may show that we are thankful to God for his benefits, so that he may be praised through us, and that we may be assured of our faith by its fruits, and so that by our godly living our neighbors may be won over to Christ” (Heidelberg Catechism, Lord’s Day 32, Question and Answer 86).

Additional Prayers

A Prayer for God to Remember Mercy
Great God, throughout history your people have cried to you from distress. They were enslaved and they cried to you. They were wandering in the wilderness and they cried to you. They were desolate in their exile, and they cried to you. We cry to you now for all the slaves in the world, for all the wanderers, for all who are exiled from home. Remember your mercy, O God. Remember your mercy in Jesus’ saving name. Amen.
— Cornelius Plantinga, Jr.

Musical Suggestion

This is a lovely, plaintive melody. The stanza should have a tone of tranquility, with a shift to a more fervent prayer in the chorus. The move from simple unison to a two-pat canon enhances this shift.
Keep the tempo steady. Consider using the rest between the second ending of the stanza and start of the refrain by allowing a half-beat of silence to intensify and personalize the quality of the prayer.
This song demands minimal accompaniment so that the human voice can be fully heard. Though the harmonic changes have a lovely simplicity, use the most understated instrument you can to play them.

Wes Sutton (b. 1955) began as a worship leader and was for 18 years the senior pastor of Vineyard Church, Loughton, Essex (UK). He said, “This song was born out of an understanding that Jesus still loves the church, but it is time for the church to take its place in the purposes of God, by the grace of God.”
