God Is Love

Introductory/Framing Text

This simple text contains only two sentences; each begins identically. “Love is of God” and
“God is love” – therefore, love each other. This gentle reminder contains much of the summary of “all the law and the prophets,” the very heart of the gospel message.

Blessing/Benediction

Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God;
everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.
Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.
God’s love was revealed among us in this way:
God sent his only Son into the world so that we might live through him.
In this is love, not that we loved God
but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Beloved, since God loved us so much, we also ought to love one another.

Musical Suggestion

Reminiscent of Taizé melodies, this short song is for meditative singing. Sing with one breath or each sentence. Sing and play quietly, with a gentle build-up to “God” each time, then recede again. Keep the tempo steady.
