To My Precious Lord (내게있는향)

Call to Worship

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus,
the author and perfecter of our faith,
who for the joy set before him endured the cross,
scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of God.
Let us consider him who endured such opposition from sinful people,
so that we will not grow weary and lose heart.
—from Hebrews 12:2-3, NIV

Confession

During his whole life on earth,
but especially at the end,
Christ sustained
in body and soul
the anger of God against the sin of the whole human race.
In response to his sacrifice, let us confess our sins to God.
—based on Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 37
— Worship Sourcebook Edition Two

Assurance

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.
He was wounded for our transgressions
and bruised for our iniquities.
Upon him was the chastisement
that makes us whole,
and with his stripes we are healed.
He will feed his flock like a shepherd
and gather the lambs in his arms.
—based on Isaiah 40:11; 53:4-5
— Worship Sourcebook Edition Two

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him
may not perish but may have eternal life.
—John 3:16, NRSV
— Worship Sourcebook Edition Two

During his whole life on earth,
but especially at the end,
Christ sustained
in body and soul
the wrath of God against the sin of the whole human race.
This he did in order that,
by his suffering as the only atoning sacrifice,
he might deliver us, body and soul,
from eternal condemnation,
and gain for us God’s grace,
righteousness, and eternal life.
—Heidelberg Catechism, Q&A 37

Blessing/Benediction

May the Lord of all compassion
satisfy you in the morning with his steadfast love,
so that you may rejoice and be glad all your days.
May the favor of the Lord our God be upon you,
and may the work of your hands prosper. Amen.
—from Psalm 90:13-17

Additional Prayers

O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart,
O God, you will not despise. Amen.
—from Psalm 51:15-17, NIV
— Worship Sourcebook Edition Two

A prayer especially mindful of children
Jesus Christ,
we want always to remember
that you love us, died for us, and rose from the dead for us.
In the next weeks, help us to remember,
and help us trust in you more and more. Amen.

Musical Suggestion

Often, songs from non-Western traditions add to our repertoire, not because of their exotic sounds, but because of their unique perspective on the Gospel. This Korean song brings a sense of intimacy and devotion that is lacking from most Western hymnody, and it reintroduces the shocking extravagance of the woman anointing Jesus’ feet with tears and oil in Luke 7:37-38. This would make the perfect offertory song during Lent. Music leaders: don’t gild the lily! A simple, unadorned accompaniment like you would with a scripture song such as “As the Deer” is all that’s needed.
