101a. The promised land

1 On Jordan's stormy banks I stand,
And cast a wishful eye
To Canaan's fair and happy land,
Where my possessions lie.

Refrain:
O that will be joyful, joyful, joyful,
O that will be joyful,
To meet to part no more:
To meet to part no more,
On Canaan's happy shore,
And sing the everlasting song
With those who've gone before.

2 O the transporting, rapturous scene,
That rises to my sight!
Sweet fields array'd in living green,
And rivers of delight. [Refrain]

3 There generous fruits that never fail,
On trees immortal grow;
There rock, and hill, and brook, and vale
With milk and honey flow. [Refrain]

4 O'er all those wide-extended plains
Shines one eternal day;
There God the Son forever reigns,
And scatters night away. [Refrain]

5 No chilling winds, or pois'nous breath
Can reach that healthful shore;
Sickness and sorrow, path and death
Are felt and fear'd no more. [Refrain]

6 When shall I reach that happy place,
And be forever blest?
When shall I see my Father's face,
And in his bosom rest? [Refrain]
