89. The Captain’s Name Is Jesus

1 ‘Neath the ensign of the Cross,
Counting all things else but loss,
We’ve enlisted in Jehovah’s war today,
We can never know defeat,
And we never will retreat,
Because a mighty Captain leads the way.

Refrain:
Oh, the Captain’s name is Jesus!
And He’ll on to triumph lead us;
And we will all obey when He commands;
Being quick to volunteer,
Bravely quelling every fear,
Holding shield and wielding sword with steady hands.

2 He has given us His word,
And it is a two-edged sword;
And before our face we hold the shield of faith;
If our hearts keep right with God
While we march where saints have trod,
We’ll surely put our enemy to death. [Refrain]

3 Yet the battle is not done,
Nor the final conquest won—
Not unless we struggle fierce against the foe;
We’ll renew it every day,
We’ll not falter by the way,
And where the Captain leads us we will go. [Refrain]

4 But at last shall come the day
When we’ll hear our Captain say:
“Halt! break ranks, the war is past, the vict’ry ours;”
Then we’ll shout and loudly sing
Hallelujahs to our King,
And praise His name with all our ransomed pow’rs. [Refrain]
