358. How Great the Mercy

1 How great the mercy of our King!
How slow avenging wrath!
He strives with patient love to bring
Our hearts to wisdom's path.

Refrain:
What wondrous mercy doth He show
To worthless rebels here below!
He pardons and His Spirit gives
And thus redeemed, the sinner lives.

2 Altho' we ne'er appreciate
For years and years His love,
In mercy long He oft doth wait
That grace our souls may move. [Refrain]

3 So great the mercy was of God,
His only Son He gave,
Who bowed beneath th'avenging rod
The souls of men to save. [Refrain]

4 Behold the cross of Calvary,
Behold the bleeding Lamb;
He died, O sinner, died for thee
In agony and shame. [Refrain]

5 His goodness toward thee is sent,
Not to endorse thy way,
But just to lead thee to repent,
Ere comes thy dying day. [Refrain]
