1 Lord, make Thou me ever meek and humble,
Thou hast called me here to bear Thy name;
Lead me by Thy hand, lest I should stumble,
And the world might put Thy child to shame.

2 Oft I tried to walk alone, obedient
Only to my own desire and will,
When my own way seem'd to me expedient,
Thou decreas'd, and I grew vainer still.

3 Hence my heart grew faint with fear and anguish,
Hence my vision dimm'd and was confus'd,
Hence my soul in grief and fear did languish,
And my stumbling feet were sorely bruis'd.

4 Lord, make Thou me ever meek and humble;
Make me understand that Thou art great;
Led by Thee I shall not stray and stumble,
Tho' the way be dark and desolate.
