186. Perhaps Your Feet May Change to Read

1 Perhaps your feet may chance to tread
A pleasant path today,
With bird notes ringing overhead,
And flow’rs along the way;
But when the evening shadows fall,
And chilling night-winds blow,
Have you a friend on whom to call,
A sheltered place to go?

Refrain:
O lift your heart to Him who waits today,
To be your guide along your earthly way;
You need a guide, a counsellor, you need a friend;
He waits, unseen, His aid to lend.

2 Perhaps today, with courage strong,
You march against the foe;
You hope to sing the victor’s song,
But do you surely know?
When multitudes are overthrown,
On whom do you depend?
Or do you think to stand alone,
Where others need a friend? [Refrain]

3 Perhaps you sail life’s open sea,
Nor need a pilot’s aid;
Have you no port to which to flee,
When storms shall make afraid?
Without the light of sun or star,
You sail the ocean wide;
But will you dare to cross the bar
Without a Pilot Guide? [Refrain]
