44. Emmanuel

1 What means this sound of hurrying feet,
That echoes through the silent street?
Come, let us go along with them—
Up, up the hill to Bethlehem.

2 Why do these men, with dewy locks,
So suddenly desert their flocks?
Why do they hasten up and down?
What are they seeking in the town?

3 Ah, look within the cattle shed,
And see that lowly manger bed!
Bow down, bow down, and praise, and laud!
Behold the Babe!—“Behold your God!”—

4 Your God come down to man’s estate,
To save, and be your Advocate;
To take you to His home above;
To call you sons—Behold what love!
