In the three synoptic gospels (Matthew 22:37/Mark 12:30/Luke 10:27–28), Jesus identifies the great commandment with these precepts drawn from Deuteronomy 6:5. In all three accounts, this commandment is followed by a second, to “love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18).
