318. Awake, Thou That Sleepest

1. Arise and shine; O Christian, do not slumber;
Thou may’st not rest too long to hide the light;
Let every step be Christ along thy pathway,
For it will lead thee up to Heaven’s height.

Refrain
Awake, thou that sleepest,
And arise from the dead,
And Christ shall give thee,
Shall give thee light.

2. Arise! says Christ, and lie not in the shadow;
Thou dost not gather profit from such rest;
Leave not thy first love for the sake of pleasure;
To live to God is to be truly blest. [Refrain]

3. Rise up, then, Christian, and pursue thy journey,
And Christ shall be thy confidence and stay;
The light of His sweet smile shall rest upon thee,
His presence shall go with thee all the way. [Refrain]

4. As rising sun, when in His brightness shining
Doth chase the darkness of the night away;
So may thy path, in this dark world of sorrow,
Shine more and more until the perfect day. [Refrain]
