563. Go Labor On

1 Go labor on; spend and be spent --
'Tis joy to do the Father's will.
It is the way the Master went;
Should not the servant tread it still?

2 Go labor on; count not the cost --
Your earthly loss is heav'nly gain.
The world indeed will praise you not,
But you will share in heaven's reign.

3 Go labor on while it is day;
The world's dark night is hast'ning on.
Speed, speed your work, do not delay,
For it is thus that souls are won.

4 They die in darkness at your side
Without a hope to cheer the tomb;
Take up the torch and wave it wide,
The torch that lights the thickest gloom.

5 Toil on, faint not, keep watch, and pray;
Be wise the erring soul to win.
Go forth into the world's wide way;
Compel the wand'rer to come in.

6 Toil on and in your toil rejoice;
For toil comes rest, for exile home.
Soon shall you hear the Bridegroom's voice,
The midnight cry, "Behold, I come!"
