1 As the Galatians vainly dream'd,
The ease can never be;
Man is not by the law redeem'd,
Nor yet by works made free.
2 Not by the deeds of any law
Can any man be sav'd,
But always kept in fear and awe,
And yet remain deprav'd.
3 The carnal mind will e'er remain
At enmity with God,
Until the soul is born again,
And cleans'd by Jesus' blood.
4 It was by covenant of grace,
That God in Christ had made;
He justified the fallen race,
For which the Saviour bled.
5 O, why should we be so unwise!
To trust to what we do;
To rush on such an enterprize,
That cannot bear us through.
