569. God of the spirit-wind, whose rushing quickened

1 God of the spirit-wind, whose rushing quickened
Men of all nations to faith in Thy Word,
Waken our courage as theirs is awakened,
Breathe out Thy spirit on us, O Lord.

2 Touch us with cloven flame, forging forgiveness,
Fusing our hearts into fervent accord,
Steeling our wills with the faith that Thou livest,
Temper our souls with Thy fire, O Lord.

3 God of the glowing love, making men brothers,
Burn out the dross of belief in the sword;
Fashion one vision more golden than others:
Peace evermore through Thy mercy, O Lord.

4 Then shall Thy spirit-sons, purged of all hatred,
Spuring all envy and martial reward,
Stand a world-nation, united and sacred,
Pledging eternal good-will, O Lord.
