468. One sweetly solemn thought

1 One sweetly solemn thought
Comes to me o'er and o'er;
I am nearer my home to-day
Than e'er I've been before;

2 Nearer my Father's house,
Where many mansions be,
Nearer the throne where Jesus reigns,
Nearer the crystal sea.

3 Nearer the bound of life,
Where burdens are laid down,
Nearer leaving the cross of grief,
Nearer gaining the crown.

4 But lying darkly between,
And winding down through the night,
Flows on the deep and unknown stream,
That leads me to the light.

5 Jesus, perfect my trust,
Strengthen my hand of my faith,
And be Thou near me when I stand
Upon the shore of death.
