1 Many years ago a mother fond and true,
Faintly breath’d a dying prayer for you
Ere her soul had passed beyond the skies so blue;
Will you answer mother’s prayer tonight?

When she learn’d her boy had gone astray;
Pleadingly she begged you not to turn away;
